What does Nahay Khay mean?
Nahay Khay carries the idea of “bathe and eat.” It marks the beginning of Kartik Chhath. The vrati takes a ritual bath, the home and cooking area are cleaned, and a simple satvik meal begins the observance.
Why purification comes first
Cleanliness in Chhath is both practical and symbolic. Washing, preparing utensils and setting aside a pure cooking space help the household move from ordinary routine into a period of discipline. The emphasis is not on display; it is on care, restraint and attention to every act.
Food and family practice
Meals differ between households, but they are commonly prepared without onion or garlic and with close attention to purity. Lauki or kaddu with rice and dal is familiar in many homes. Family custom should guide ingredients and preparation, especially where elders follow a particular lineage of practice.
Nahay Khay is not merely a preparation day. It establishes the spirit in which every later offering is made.
What follows
After Nahay Khay comes Kharna, a day of fasting that culminates in evening worship and prasad. The transition from a simple meal to deeper fasting reflects the gradual discipline at the heart of Chhath.
