Before you begin
Every Chhath household has its own inherited way of preparing. Use this list as an organising aid, then confirm quantities, ingredients and special items with the vrati or an experienced family elder. Buy fresh items close to the festival and keep prasad ingredients separate from everyday cooking supplies.
Baskets and vessels
- Bamboo soop for arranging offerings
- Daura or bamboo baskets for carrying prasad
- Kalash or clean vessel for water and Arghya
- Small bowls, plates and clean cloths reserved for puja
- Earthen diyas, cotton wicks and suitable oil or ghee
Fruit and natural offerings
- Whole coconut, often with its husk
- Bananas and seasonal fruit selected by the family
- Sugarcane stalks
- Fresh turmeric, ginger or radish where customary
- Betel leaves, betel nut and flowers according to local practice
Prasad ingredients
- Wheat flour, jaggery or sugar and ghee for thekua
- Rice, milk and jaggery for Kharna prasad
- Clean water and any additional ingredients used by your household
For the ghat
- Simple clean clothing for the vrati and helpers
- A safe lamp cover if the location is windy
- Reusable bags for carrying items home
- Drinking water for accompanying family members
- A small waste bag so flowers, packaging and disposable items are not left behind
Safety first: use designated ghat access, keep children close, avoid deep or fast-moving water and follow instructions from local organisers.
A simple preparation sequence
Check baskets and vessels first, purchase shelf-stable ingredients next, and leave fresh fruit and flowers until nearer the observance. Wash and dry reusable items carefully. Label separate prasad supplies if several relatives are helping. This quiet organisation protects the sense of purity and reduces last-minute stress.
